Overview

The network engineering team at Akamai is responsible for all Enterprise network infrastructure and LAN/MAN/WAN as well as internet connectivity at our 50+ corporate offices worldwide. We provide guidance and Tier2/3 support for our Enterprise network operations group. We also play a key role in evaluating new network technologies and products. As a member of the Network Engineering team, you will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with network tool development and network automation

  • Configuring, updating and maintaining network monitoring tools

  • Documenting and diagramming existing enterprise networks

  • Configuring and maintaining routers, switches, firewalls and other network infrastructure

About the Team

The Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) team consists of Platform Engineering, Network Engineering, Telecom Engineering Messaging and Collaboration tools and Architecture. The EIS Architecture team is responsible for the architecture of the network, video and telecom infrastructure that carries our global enterprise traffic, and we are responsible for the security, stability and performance of the corporate network environment.

You will be part of Enterprise Infrastructure Services who support Corporate IT infrastructure. We evaluate, customize, build, and support products and tools to manage IT infrastructure and scale its operations.

Required Skills

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s in related field and returning to the program after completion of the Co-op.

  • Experience managing and troubleshooting Cisco and/or Juniper routers and switches

  • Experience managing network security devices (e.g. firewalls, VPN concentrators). Juniper firewall experience highly preferred.

  • Experience utilizing advanced network troubleshooting tools (Wireshark/Packet analysis, Netflow, Fluke)

  • Some experience with Perl/Python/PHP or similar scripting languages

Desired Skills

  • Experience interfacing with Network Monitoring systems and Linux command line tools

  • Experience common scripting languages, using APIs or developing simple web apps.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • General understanding of common routing protocols (e.g. BGP, OSPF)

  • Working knowledge of Ethernet networking technologies (including, VLANs, 802.1x, 802.1Q, STP, LACP) and network security concepts

  • General understanding of Internet technologies (e.g. IPSec, HTTP/s, SSH, DNS)

  • Knowledge of client-based networking with systems running Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux

  • The ability to install and configure equipment, including the ability to lift at least 30 lbs.
